Activity #4 in The Ultimate Kid’s Guide to Happiness© discusses one of the most difficult abilities a person can develop, however doing so has been proven in scientific research to provide a dramatic increase one’s level of emotional wellbeing.

The ability to FORGIVE others and ourselves comes with extraordinary benefits both physiologically and psychologically. We can model this way of being for our children by showing them we have the capacity to forgive others.

As usual, the biggest challenge reaps the biggest rewards and forgiveness for many is a monstrous challenge. The term “forgive and forget” is not entirely possible because we will not forget the event or the person that hurt us, however, when we forgive, how we remember the person or event changes and the level of painful emotion is dramatically reduced.

An Exercise in Happiness© begins with The World’s Most Powerful Words, and explains the incredible power of the words “I Forgive You” and how these words can make the world a much happier place. Not only do we feel free from the emotional burden of holding on to negative feelings when we forgive, but when we are forgiven for our actions toward others we feel deep feelings of gratitude.

To forgive, in some cases can be extremely difficult to do, but remember that the person you are forgiving does not even have to know you have forgiven them.

When you forgive you do so for you.

Another challenging type of forgiveness is to FORGIVE OURSELF. However, forgiving our-self for something we have said or done to hurt someone else is crucial to our self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Imagine how hard it is to be a friend with, or even be in the same room with someone you can’t forgive.

  • Now imagine that person you can’t forgive is you?
  • How difficult would it be to set great goals and have aspirations for a wonderful life?
  • How much do think you would deserve to have an outstanding life if you could not forgive yourself?

Working with your child using the activities in An Exercise in Happiness© will not only instill habits of happiness in both you and your child, but you will be modeling the person you wish to see in your child.
